보건타임즈 : 민병현 교수의 지지체 이용한 연골세포 배양법 해외서 호평

아주대 의과대학 정형외과학교실 민병현 교수가 발표한 ‘지지체를 이용한 연골세포 배양법'이란 연구논문이 세계적으로 유명한 외국 저널, ‘Artificial organs(인공 장기)'에 이어 다음호 리뷰에도 게재될 예정이어서 해외의학계로부터 호평을 받고 있다.

이는 ‘Artificial organs' 2007년 3월호에 게재된 민 교수의 ‘Tissue Engineered Scaffolding Allows Reproduction of Cartilage Tissue(조직 공학적 지지체를 이용한 연골조직의 재건)'란 제목의 논문이 다음 달 ‘Artificial organs' 4월호에 또다시 한번 기사 형태로 실리기 때문이다.

‘Artificial organs'은 세계적인 출판사 ‘blackwell'이 출판하는 월간 저널로, ‘인공 장기'에 대한 전세계의 다양한 논문들을 활발히 게재하고 있다.

‘Artificial organs'은 다양한 연구논문과 함께 ‘blackwell' 출판사가 출간하는 800여 개의 잡지와 6천여 종의 책에 게재되는 내용 중 새롭게 시도되는 연구, 뛰어난 연구결과, 새로운 연구경향 등을 엄선, 세계의학계에 소개하고 있다.

Suwon, Korea April XX, 2007 - A new study examines the use of tissue-engineered scaffolding made of cartilage cells, which have a limited ability to heal naturally, to replace defective cartilage tissue. Cartilage cells are extracted and seeded to the scaffold which is implanted into the body, where new cartilage tissue is grown along the structure. The study appears in the journal Artificial Organs.

The procedure was extremely successful in tested mice as the study found these scaffolds to be a far more effectivemeans of regenerating cartilage than traditional therapy. The shrinkage of cartilage that occurs frequently in other tissue engineering methods, and often renders the replacement tissue wrongly-sized for implantation, did not occur in the study. The scaffolding allowed the newly grown cartilage to maintain its volume during cultivation and post-procedure.

"The cell-derived scaffold could provide a favorable environment for cartilage cells to maintain their characteristics while synthesizing cartilage in the scaffold structure in vivo," notes study author Dr. Byoung-Hyun Min. "Cell-derived scaffolding may hold great promise for the future. A variety of applications are possible for the engineering of cartilage tissue as the shape and porosity can be altered to suit the type of tissue required."

‘조직 공학적 지지체를 이용한 연골조직의 재생-새로운 치료법 제시

손상된 연골을 재생하는데 ‘연골세포를 이용한 조직 공학적 지지체'를 이용한 것은 새로운 연구분야다.
이 연구는 환자에게 이식될 지지체에 환자의 몸에서 추출한 연골세포를 넣어 그 속에서 배양시킨 것으로, ‘Artificial organs' 저널에 소개됐다.

이 연구는 쥐 실험을 통해 기존의 연골재생법 보다 ‘지지체'를 이용한 방법이 더 효과적임을 성공적으로 증명했다. 특히 다른 조직 공학적 방법에서 종종 나타나는 ‘연골조직의 수축'과 적합하지 않은 크기의 연골조직을 이식하게 되는 현상이 나타나지 않았다. 이 연구에서 사용된 지지체가 그 속에서 연골세포가 배양되는 동안 그 부피를 유지할 수 있도록 돕기 때문이다.

민 교수는 “(돼지에서 얻은 연골세포가 분비하는 세포외 기질)세포를 이용해 만든 지지체는 연골세포가 그 속에서 배양되는 동안 그들 고유의 성격을 그대로 유지할 수 있도록 적절한 환경을 제공한다”고 말했다. 또한, “세포로 만든 지지체를 이용한 연구는 전망이 밝다. 연골재생에서처럼 필요에 따라 조직의 다양한 모양과 다공도가 필요한 다른 조직재생에 다양하게 응용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다”고 민 교수는 덧붙혔다.'

한편, 민 교수는 “이 연구는 환자에서 연골 떼내 실험실에서 배양하여 이식하는 단계에서 더 발전된 방법으로 연골배양이식에 지지체를 이용했다. 이 지지체는 돼지에서 얻은 연골세포가 분비하는 세포외 기질을 동결건조한 것으로 형태는 마치 스폰지와 같다”고 하면서 “이번에 국제적으로 좋은 평가를 받아 매우 기쁘다. 현재 동물실험을 더 진행하고 있으며, 임상에 적용될 경우 다양한 조직재생술에서 유용하게 사용될 것으로 기대된다”고 소감을 밝혔다.
