담배의 피해로부터 벗어날 해법은 어떤 방법이 있을까?

Everyone first points out that one should refrain from smoking.
이런 목적에서 개발된 금연제를 비롯해 금연보조기구, 각종 치료요법 등이 판매되고 있으나 기대만큼 못 미치는 효과, 번거로움, 예상하지 못한 부작용으로 국내외 금연시장에서 버림받는 등 뚜렷한 족적을 남기지 못한 상태에서 금연의 기대치에 맞는 한방금연제 ‘NPL-X’(제품명 노스모)가 국내 기술로 처음 개발돼 국내외 의약계와 담배를 끊으려는 끽연 자들, 언론계의 시선을 끌어 모우고 있다.
Various supplements, remedies, have been developed to help smokers stop smoking are sold at market. However most of them are neglected because they are less effective than expected, are difficult to use, or have unexpected side effects. Under these circumstances, NPL-X (Brand: NOSMO), stop smoking product of made from a medicinal herb, has been developed by our own technology in Korea that has caught the eyes of medical, pharmaceutical circles, smokers who want to quit smoking, and journalists.

NPL-X (Brand: NOSMO) is the core substance to get smokers to quit smoking that can considerably reduce withdrawal symptoms after the person stops smoking. The product works by rapidly breaking down the nicotine in the smoker’s body, and discharging it out through urine. 최근 동의과학대학 식품과학계열 이호재 교수팀은 그 동안 연구해 왔던 금연관련 핵심물질 ‘NPL-X’가 미국 FDA의 엄정한 심사를 거쳐 미국연방식품의약품화장품연방법(FD&C) 413조(413a)에 의거 Dietary Supplement(건강기능식품)에 사용될 수 있는 ‘New Dietary Ingredient’에 사용가능료로 등재하게 됐다고 밝혔다.
Professor Ho Jae Lee announced that ‘NPL-X’, the core substance of the stop-smoking product was registered as a ‘New Dietary Ingredient’ and the applicable material that can be used for a dietary supplement in accordance with code 413a of US FD&C (United States Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act) through the strict inspection of the FDA.
He is a professor led the research team of Food Science Division of Dong Eui Institute of Technology in Busan, Korea.
이 기술은 이 교수가 (주)노스모(대표 박선호)와 산학협동으로 개발, 제품화한 뒤 상용화에 성공했으며 차, 정제(tablet), 캔디 형태로 미국, 일본에 소개된 바 있다.
The technology has been developed by the industry-university cooperation between Dr. Lee and NOSMO Co., Ltd. (CEO: Sun Ho Park ?). It was successfully commercialized, introduced later in the US, and Japan in the form of tea, tablets and candy.
이 기술을 개발한 이 교수는 천연물 소재를 활용한 Nutraceuticals의 개발 분야에서 기능성 천연색소, Oxycarotenoids, 전통 한약재 등을 주요 연구 소재로 삼아 연구해오면서 이중 전통 한약재를 사용해 10년 동안 금연기능 제품을 개발해온 식품학자다.
Dr. Lee, the developer of the technology has researched mainly functional natural colors, oxycatotenoids, traditional medicinal herbs and so forth in the field of nutraceuticals. Using traditional medicinal herbs, he has developed the products to stop smoking for ten years now.
이 교수가 금연제품을 개발하게 된 동기는 의외로 순수하다.

많은 흡연자들이 담배의 유해성을 잘 알고도 건강이 극도로 악화된 상황에서 담배를 끊지 못하고 고통스러워하는 모습을 자주 목격하면서 과학자의 한 사람으로써 이분들을 도울 수 있는 연구를 진행하면 보람 있는 일이겠다 는 동기에서 금연제품개발에 나서게 됐다.

I noticed that lots of smokers could not quit smoking even when they were in very bad physical condition and well aware of the harmfulness of cigarette smoking. I started to develop anti-smoking products based on my thought that it would be a rewarding job as a scientist to study to help them.

시중에 금연을 돕는 많은 제품들이 나와 있지만 효과적으로 담배를 끊게 하는 제품은 아직은 없는 실정이며 현재 시중에 유통되는 금연제품으로는 크게 2가지 군으로 나눌 수 있다.
There are lots of stop-smoking aid products, however, the effective ones are rarely found. At the moment, there are roughly two groups of stop-smoking products that are on the market.

유사흡연 행위를 도울 수 있는 제품과 또 다른 제품은 흡연자의 몸 속에 니코틴을 주입시켜주는 방식의 제품이 나와있습니다.
<Dr. Lee’s Comment>
One group is analogous smoking functional products, and the other group of products infuses nicotine into the smoker’s body.
이 교수는 그러나 이들 제품들은 효과 면에서 의문이 많은데다 흡연자의 건강에 좋지 않은 영향, 부작용 등의 문제점이 드러나 이들 제품의 컨셉 자체를 과감하게 배척하는 획기적인 사고의 전환이 필요했다고 전했다.
Dr. Lee said that he had to convert the concept itself of the conventional stop-smoking products, since it was revealed that they had a number of doubtful points, bad side effects on the smokers’ health, and so on.
이 교수는 이를 위해 우리 체질에 맞는 전통 한방비법에서 그 해답을 찾았다.
Finally Dr. Lee found the solution to be a secret method of the traditional medicinal herbs that suits our physical constitutions.

우리의 전통 한약제를 다루고 있는 ‘동의보감’과 ‘방약합편’에 기재되어 있는 여러 가지 한약재 중에서 흡연과 집적적인 관련이 있는 장기인 기관지와 심폐기능을 보호할 수 있는 한약재를 먼저 선별하였습니다. 그리고 이들 한약제가 가지고 있는 항산화 기능을 조사하였습니다. 그 이유는 저희가 흡연을 피해를 유발시킬 수 있는 일차적인 대상물질이 흡연으로 유발되는 ‘활성산소’( 노화 및 질병을 유발하는 유해산소) 입니다. 그래서 이들 활성산소를 제거시켜주는 기능이 높은 한약제를 우선 선발하게 된 것입니다. 이렇게 선발된 한약제들 중에서 니코틴을 분해 배출시키는 기능이 높은 한약제를 다시 선별해서 이들 한약제를 가지고 저희들이 NPL-X 조성을 마칠 수 있었습니다.

At first I selected the medicinal herbs that protect the smoking directly related internal organs such as bronchus and cardiopulmonary function among numerous medicinal herbs listed in ‘Dong Eui Bo Gam”. This book is the most authentic and comprehensive bibliography on Korean traditional medicinal herbs since a few centuries ago.
And I investigated the anti-oxidization functions of the selected medicinal herbs. The primary material that damages smokers is ‘reactive oxygen species’ (harmful oxygen that induces aging and diseases) created by smoking. In this connection, I selected first highly effective medicinal herbs to eliminate the active oxygen. Among those selected potentials, I repeatedly selected the medicinal herbs that possess the most effective functions to break down and discharge nicotine. The development of NPL-X was completed by finally selecting medicinal herbs.
