Nicotine performs various pharmacological effects in the body such as the constriction of capillary and peripheral vessels. It raises blood pressure, exasperates the heartbeat, stimulates the nerves, damages blood vessel walls, and accelerates arteriosclerosis.  More than anything else, nicotine develops the habituation to keep on smoking.
Around 2mg of nicotine is in a cigarette, and the amount of nicotine in two packs (40 sticks) of cigarettes can kill a human being if taken simultaneously.
